Can I waive UC SHIP with Medi Cal?
If you are already covered by other health insurance, such as through an employer, your parents coverage, or Medi-Cal, you can submit a waiver application to waive your enrollment in UC SHIP, and not be charged the UC SHIP Fee each term.

What is the UC Ship waiver?
All registered UCLA students are automatically enrolled into the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) at the start of each new academic year. Waiving UC SHIP is an annual process and must be completed every academic year to avoid being automatically enrolled in UC SHIP and charged the UC SHIP premium fee.
How do you deny a UC ship?
To waive out of UC SHIP, you must submit a request on-line during the open waiver periods and by the posted deadlines as shown below. If approved, the waiver is in effect for the current term and the remainder of the academic year. A new waiver request must be submitted at the beginning of each academic year.
Is UC ship better than Medi-Cal?

Can I waive health insurance?
There is no penalty for opting out of coverage. When an employee doesn’t want health insurance from their employer, they waive coverage. Or, employees can waive coverage on behalf of a family member who was previously under their plan. A waiver of coverage is a form employees sign to opt out of insurance.
Is UC Ship private?
UC SHIP is a not-for-profit, self-funded student health benefit plan administered by the UC Office of the President. UC SHIP was created with a student shared governance model to meet the Regental mandate that all registered students have health coverage as a non-academic condition of enrollment.
