How do you render Z Depth pass in Maya?
Create and view depth files
- Turn on Depth Channel (Z Depth) in the Render Settings window.
- Open the renderable camera’s Attribute Editor in which you want to create a depth file.
- In the camera’s Attribute Editor, select a Depth Type from the Output Settings section (Closest or Furthest Visible Depth).
What is Z depth?
Z-Depth Pass is a very old technique that is used in the composting of 3D computer graphics. Basically, it lets you render 3D scenes without depth of field blur, and then add depth of field as part of post-processing. Most compositing software has tools to create fake depth of field from Z-Depth Pass.

Z-depth works on a grayscale value range to create a depth of field effect when used. The Z buffer is a two-dimensional array (X and Y) that stores the Z-value of each screen pixel. If another object must be rendered at the same pixel location, the algorithm overrides the previous value if the new pixel is closer to the camera.
