Is Nhvas mandatory?
Participation in the NHVAS and TruckSafe is voluntary, whilst accreditation under the WAHVA is compulsory for operators wishing to use restricted access vehicles in WA. Participation in the NHVAS provides heavy vehicle operators with regulatory concessions designed to boost operator and industry productivity.
Is there mutual recognition between Nhvas and Wahva?
The NHVAS and WAHVA are regulatory schemes administered by a government regulator. TruckSafe is an industry-based scheme and, at present, is not “recognised” as part of the regulatory arrangements. Schemes do not, at present, mutually recognise audit outcomes from the other schemes.

How do I get BFM certification?
for BFM and AFM, you must:
- be medically assessed as per the Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive.
- provide a medical practitioner with a completed Driver Health Questionnaire – PDF.
- have a Fitness to Drive Report – PDF.
- complete the applicable VET courses in fatigue management as indicated in the BFM guide.
