How deep is Flam fjord?
Flåm is nestled innermost in the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the 204-km long and up to 1308 meter deep Sognefjord. Flåm is the end station of the popular Flåm Railway, which is included in several of our popular round trips.

How was aurlandsfjord formed?
Like all the Norwegian fjords, the Aurlandsfjord was formed by a glacier. The heavy ice carved u-shaped valleys into the mountainside over many thousands of years. When the glaciers retreated, the ocean filled the resulting valley.

As the name suggests, Nordfjord lies in the northern part of the county of Vestland, and the fjord with the same name extends 106 km from Stad on the coast to the town of Stryn to the east. The region consists of Stryn, Volda, Gloppen, Stad, and Bremanger.

Do fjords freeze?
Fjords generally don’t freeze over in winter. Nordland and Troms outer part of fjords have january temperatures below 0°C (around -3°C), while the inner parts are relatively cold typically around -6°C or colder into the valley.
Can you swim in the fjords in Norway?
In the summer time nothing beats a refreshing dip in the sea! In Fjord Norway you find white beaches, small coves but also swimming pools. The sea temperature can some places be above 20 degrees, and if you are really lucky with the weather you can even get the impression of being a lot further south.
What makes a fjord a fjord?
Fjords are found in locations where current or past glaciation extended below current sea level. A fjord is formed when a glacier retreats, after carving its typical U-shaped valley, and the sea fills the resulting valley floor.
