Füssen is worth visiting in its own right. Füssen is a small lovely town a few miles from the castles. The old town center and pedestrian area are really pretty with interesting buildings, water fountains, and restaurants. The Hohes Schloss, Rathaus, Museum, Franciscan Monastery and St.
Can you visit Neuschwanstein castle without a tour?
If you want to enter Neuschwanstein and/or Hohenschwangau, you are required to book a guided tour; you cannot enter the castles on your own, although you can view both from the outside without purchasing the tour tickets. You can purchase tour tickets in advance online, or at the ticket center on the day of your visit.

What is Füssen known for?
Füssen is a tiny town in Bavaria, about a kilometre from the Austrian border, that has historically been a major centre for violin making. It takes about two hours to get here by train from Munich, and is a stop on most bus tours that take tourists to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles.

Bus 71 runs from Vils directly to the castles. Innsbruck to Füssen takes about 3 hours. Füssen is on the end of the Romantic Road, coming from Augsburg as Bundesstraße 17 (B 17). From Munich take the Autobahn A 96, leave at Landsberg Ost and follow the B 17. If you come from the north via Autobahn A7, take the last exit before the Austrain border.
