Are podencos smart?
Active, intelligent, and fast on their feet, the Podenco is an experienced hunter and has a high prey drive. Small animals in the household would pay to be wary of this dog. For many years this dog has been used to hunt rabbits and is still employed to do so in their homeland of the Canary Islands.
Do podencos make good family pets?
Podenco Care Their stamina and hunting roots mean that they are a dog that needs a lot of exercise and stimulation. They are usually very social with other dogs and often live well in a multi-dog household.
How high can podencos jump?
Tania – we have had podencos jump 7ft walls. People need to be aware that some can jump high. Not only that, when they come over form Spain, depending on the nature of the dog ie: if timid could easily bolt and be scared by something, a secure garden is a must and even then the dogs needs to be carefully supervised!
Are podencos hard to train?
I can’t emphasise enough what fabulous hounds podencos are; marvellous companion dogs and, if you get a young one, easy to train and marvellous agility dogs (they are very popular in agility competitions in Germany especially). Can you let Podencos off the lead?
Premack – One of the biggest reasons for a Podenco failing to recall is because there is something better on offer. Premack is all about using the rewards the dog wants. Secure fields may be the only place you feel safe to let your dog off lead and that is absolutely fine.
