What makes a Ford AOD transmission shift?
The AOD is a true hydromechanical 4-speed automatic transmission controlled by a manual shifter and throttle valve (TV) cable. They also have a throttle-controlled kickdown linkage, which works with the vacuum modulator to control shift-points mostly for wide-open throttle (WOT) downshift.
How do you know if your shift linkage is bad?
How do I know if my transmission linkage is bad?
- Grinding noise.
- Odd sounds like thumping, bumping, squealing, and whirring.
- Transmission oil leaks.
- The car is not getting into gear.
- The car is stuck in just one gear.
- Shifting gears is so difficult.
- Transmission is jumping into the neutral mode.
How do you adjust manual shift linkage?
How do you adjust manual shift linkage? Rotate the transmission shift lever counterclockwise (toward the front of the transmission) to the first (Park) position, then turn it clockwise (rearward) to the 2nd detent (Neutral) position.
Where is the TV port on an AOD transmission?
You will need to install your gauge into the TV test port on the transmission. The port is eight inch pipe thread, and is located on the passenger side of the transmission. Toward the back of the transmission, above the pan rail you will find two 7/16” headed pipe plugs side by side.
How much horsepower can a stock AOD transmission handle?
Because of this odd power flow, Lentech’s Len Bertrand tells us a stock AOD can handle 450 hp, at best, and will always be hard on 3/OD clutch packs.
What year AOD is best?
’89-’93 are the best years for the AOD, they already have the better internals for anything with horsepower.
How does TV affect shift timing on AOD?
On AOD and other transmissions that use a throttle valve (TV) instead of an old-school vacuum modulator, proper TV-cable adjustment is critical for achieving proper shift quality and timing—but a different rear gear ratio, camshaft, and/or vehicle weight than the core transmission’s original stock vehicle application also affects shift timing.
Can a stock shifter be used for an AOD?
Using the stock shifter is fine, you’ll just need to fab a lever to connect them out of all thread rod and some heim joints or similar, like a throttle lever rod. You’ll also need a TV cable (Lokar) of course. Oh and GO TIGERS! I thought you couldn’t use a AOD with a carburetor vehicle. The AOD conversion has fully matured.
Can a C4 be used as an AOD?
Click the LMR Logo for more about the knowmoto Mega Thread! the C4 and the AOD use the same detents, both number and location, so you will just need to get the adjustment right to line everything up. make sure that you start with a floor shift AOD from a mustang of Tbird so the shift lever will be in the right orientation.
Why does the Trans burn up on an AOD?
It’s not a “kickdown” cable which is how the C4 is setup. On the AOD it’s a pressure control which is why it burns up the trans if not setup right. Too little tension equals low pressure which equals slipping clutches. It does affect shift timing, but does more for pressure control.
