How breathable is NeoShell?
Common outdoor industry estimates put its breathability at around the 30.000g/m2/24h mark. It has a hydrostatic head of around 10,000mm. NeoShell is made in a completely different manner to fabrics like eVent or Gore-Tex and from a polyurethane rather than PTFE.
Is NeoShell windproof?
Even though NeoShell isn’t technically windproof, it is still waterproof. Polartec claims NeoShell has a waterproof rating of 10,000mm (for more on waterproof ratings, check out Outerwear 101), and my experience corroborates that 10K number.
How does NeoShell work?
Well, it all starts with the fact that Polartec’s NeoShell membrane is 80% air. It’s made up of millions of nano fibres all tangled together but with spaces and chambers between them that air – moisture laden air – can flow through. They simply measure the rate that moisture moves through a solid sheet of plastic.”
How do you clean a Polartec Neoshell?
Polartec Neo Shell Machine wash at 30°C. Be sure to rinse the jacket well so that it is free of any residue. After a couple of washes, you should reproof the jacket. For only a jacket that efficiently repels water is also breathable.
What material is like Goretex?
Good alternatives to GORE-TEX are also available, such as FUTURELIGHT™ from The North Face, Pertex Shield, and less expensive PU film fabrics like Patagonia’s H2No.
Is futurelight better than Gore-Tex?
Another plus, FutureLight is several times quieter than Gore-Tex, eVent, or any other nylon-based fabric. It’s not as silent as cotton. This is especially noticeable when compared side-by-side with other water and windproof fabrics. If this is the future, it will thankfully be a much less obnoxious one.

How does the NeoShell for the Rab stretch work?
NeoShell works, apparently, using ‘a dynamic two way air exchange’. Air can pass out carrying moisture, so sweat can move out as soon as you start sweating, whereas sweat needs to become vapour to get through Gore-Tex. Can fabric be windproof and air permeable at the same time, though?
When did Polartec come out with the NeoShell?
Some background: NeoShell follows Polartec’s successful foray into really water resistant soft shell with Powershield Pro in 2010. Sort of soft shell, sort of hard shell, NeoShell is a new shell concept. For me, the fabric has its own place in the market and doesn’t need to war with Gore-Tex.
