1. Pull the side panels and the seat to make getting to the top bolt easier….
- Lock the top of the shock in a vice so it is upside down.
- Use a hammer and punch to loosen the lock nut.
- Turn the spring in the loosening direction until all the preload is off and you can tap out the spacer.
- Remove the spring.

Is the DR650 disc bigger than the 400?
The stock 650 disc is bigger than the 400 too. You face similar challenges with USD conversions. The DR650 shock can’t cope with any additional weight over a 75kg rider, the stock spring is really light and the dampening is minimal. The shock is a 40mm KYB unit, compression adjustable only.
Are there aftermarket springs for Ohlins suspensions?
There are many rates in aftermarket springs depending on your weight and loading. You can use an Ohlins springs, yellow in color for this shock in many optional rates but a new shock with real features is the way to go because the standard shock is basic at best.
