Founder, Carol Fennley, began Hope House in 1998 after the Baltimore Sun reported in 1997 that Washington, D.C. had an incarceration rate that’s four times the national average.
What is a Hope House?
Hope House provides individualized support to adults with a diagnosis of an intellectual or developmental disability. We support people up to 24 hours a day in their own homes and help them live successfully within the community.
How did Hope House start?
In 1964, a group of parents in Hampton Roads came together to find an alternative to institutionalizing their adult children with developmental disabilities. The result was Hope House — Virginia’s first group home.
Where was hope house founded?
HOPE HOUSE, founded in 1972 and opened in Nov. 1973, was the first rehabilitation home in Cleveland for alcoholic WOMEN. Hope House, Inc., was formed by Sister Nancy Jean Tomcyak in response to studies by the METROPOLITAN HEALTH PLANNING CORP.
When did Hope House open?

Building started in 1993 and when Hope House opened its doors in October 1995 we were only the tenth children’s hospice in the world.
What do Hope House do?
In a nutshell, Hope House Children’s Hospices provide specialist nursing care and support to more than 750 children aged 0 to 25 years and their families who live in Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales. We provide respite care in our two hospices and in the families’ own homes.
What does Ty Gobaith do?
It offers peace and tranquillity to the children and families who visit and is sensitive to the needs of the local population, many of whom speak Welsh as a first language. Our Snowflake suite enables families to stay close to their child after they have died and before the funeral.

Statutory funding pays on average just one month’s running costs every year. For the other 11 months we are completely dependent on donations from our supporters to keep our doors open and our services running.
