Dilute hydrochloric acid liberates loosely bound ferric iron from protein. For many years we used Gomori’s method for demonstrating ferric iron.

- Bring sections to distilled water.
- On a rack, flood with equal parts mixture of ferrocyanide and hydrochloric acid for 10 min (asbestos bodies for 30 mins)
- Wash well in distilled water, several changes 5 min.
- Counterstain with filtered neutral red stain 1 min.
- Rinse in distilled water.
