Can you split a package of bees?
Second, make sure to shake in some extra nurse bees. For example, a beekeeper who wants to sell off some colonies will typically make much smaller splits, more accurately called nucs or starter colonies. That way, they don’t weaken their existing colonies too much and they can make a higher number of nucs.
How do you transfer package bees?
Gently pull the queen cage out of the package and set it off to the side on top of the frame. Turn the package upside down and gently shake it to help the bees fall into the hive. You may need to strike the side of the package to help move the bees into the hive.

You should put the packages in a dark space that is cool, but not really cold or hot. I’d say about 50-55° F (10-12°C) is good. Too warm and they will thrash around and want to fly, too cold and their food requirement goes way up. Also, choose a spot that is dark and quiet.

You should not have a problem splitting a package two months in. If you have two deeps with most of the frames drawn and coverwd with bees, no reason you could not make 2-3 nucs with them, especially if you will be adding a mated queen to each.
How late can you split a beehive?
The best time to do a split is mid-spring. It will give the new colony the whole summer to adjust so they can be ready before winter. The new colony will always have fewer bees, but if you’re using the right equipment, they’ll soon start working on their colony and making it grow.

Can you buy bees online?
You have many online and mail-order sites to choose from. You can order package bees or nucs from most of these sources, but you should also check with your local beekeeping association since it is sometimes easier and less expensive to obtain your bees from local sources.
How do you know when to split a beehive?
It’s best to split the hive when it’s getting very full. The bees will begin preparing to make another queen and you will know this by finding queen cells in your hive. To properly split a hive, you should add a frame with one of these queen cells to a new hive box.
