All of B&W’s 5th wheel hitches utilize a cam action release for the jaws. When the latch handle is secured in the closed position, the jaws will stay locked around the kingpin of your trailer for towing. The jaws will open and you’ll be unhitched from your trailer.
How do I remove a BW companion 5th wheel hitch?
To remove the hitch, simply reverse the process. Pull the release handle in the driver’s side wheel well, then climb in the truck bed. Remove the two pins that hold the fifth wheel head in place, and lift the head off the hitch. Then, you can lift straight up on the base to remove it.

Should you grease the fifth wheel jaws?
Grease can build up on the fifth wheel and attract dirt and debris, so degreasing it prior to inspecting it allows you to see any potential damage more easily. It is also very important to make sure all the grease buildup is removed in and around the lock jaw, throat and pivot points.
Should I grease my 5th wheel hitch?
Your fifth wheel hitch should be lubricated and checked before each trip using a lithium grease. Lubricate all pivot points where the hitch head moves forward, behind and side to side. If you have a slider unit also, this should also be lubricated. No grease is required if you are using a lube plate.
