Do you need a thermostat for reptiles?
Thermostats are a vital piece of equipment for keeping reptiles – not every species will require one, but most do.
What does a thermostat do for reptiles?
They work by providing a ‘sliding’ amount of electricity to the heat source, which causes a light emitting heat source to ‘Dim’ up and down to maintain temperature. If the temperature at the thermostat probe is too hot, then the amount of electricity supplied is decreased and the bulb dims.
Do reptile heat mats need a thermostat?
For Heat Mats, position the sensory directly on top of the mat. The thermostat itself is positioned outside of your vivarium so you have easy access to it. Research the required temperature for the “hot” side of your reptile habitat and set the thermostat to maintain this temperature.
What’s the difference between thermostat and dimmer?
Dimming thermostats are similar to a pulse but instead of sending packets of energy it will simply reduce the amount of energy being sent. As the thermostat is not flicking on and off or sending packets of energy it is putting less strain on fragile filaments making it perfect for use with basking lights.
Can you put a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat?
They can be used for any device that won’t be damaged easily and doesn’t put out light. These include Ceramic heat emitters, heat wires, heat mats and surface warmed decorations like ‘heat caves’.
Why should there be a thermostat in the vivarium?
The thermostat controls the heat lamp, switching it on and off to maintain the correct temparature in the vivarium – much like a central heating controller in your house.
Where should thermostat sensor be placed?
It’s best to put your temperature sensor:
- In a room where you spend a lot of time, such as your bedroom or living room.
- About chest high.
- Within a maximum of 50 feet (15 m) of your thermostat, so the sensor and thermostat can communicate wirelessly.
What happens if you use a heat mat without a thermostat?
You can use the heat mats without the thermostat, but you will run the risk of possibly cooking if you are not careful. Before purchasing your heat mat, consider the conditions you live in.
Can you use a thermostat with a ceramic bulb?
Use a thermostat with any heating element. For a ceramic, either a dimming or a pulse stat are best.
