- Check and clean the site. • Wash your hands with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry them. • Take off the dressing and throw it away.
- Flush the C-tube with water. • The C-tube will take about 10 days to heal. During this time, you need to keep the C-tube clear by flushing it with warm tap water twice a day.
What is the purpose of Cecostomy tube?
In a cecostomy, the healthcare provider puts a tube (catheter) into the first part of the large intestines (cecum). It is in the lower right abdomen. The provider injects liquid medicine into the cecum through this tube. The medicine helps coax the feces out of the body through the rectum.
How do you flush a C-tube?
To flush:
- Gather your supplies.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Fill your syringe with 10 milliliters of normal saline.
- Remove the cap from the end of the C-tube.
- Insert the tip of the syringe into the end of the C-tube and turn (Picture 4).
- Slowly inject normal saline.
- Put the cap back on the C-tube.
How does a Chait work?
The Chait® cecostomy procedure achieves the same goal of antegrade enema therapy but in this procedure, a tube is placed into the cecum and is left there indefinitely. An adapter attaches to the opening of the tube and the enema fluid is infused through this tube which is removed after the infusion is finished.

Proper bowel preparation is important for successful placement of a cecostomy tube. The doctor begins the procedure by inflating the colon with air until the cecum is distended. The doctor inserts a small needle through the skin into the cecum, and then attaches the bowel to the abdominal wall with two stitches.
Is a Cecostomy permanent?
A cecostomy tube needs to be changed every 6-12 months. These are changed in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic. Sometimes your doctor needs to give your child some medicine to make him or her sleepy for this tube change.
