What are reference strains?
There is significant confusion between bacterial type strains and reference strains. The type strain is defined in the context of formal bacterial taxonomy whereas reference strain means that the strain is widely used within the community or adopted by a formally recognized institution such as FDA and CDC.
What are the three types of strain?
In response to stress, rock may undergo three different types of strain – elastic strain, ductile strain, or fracture.
What is NCTC in India?
The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) is a proposed federal anti-terror agency to be created in India, modelled on the National Counterterrorism Center of the US. The proposal has however met with much criticism from the Chief Ministers of various states who see this as a means of weakening India’s federalism.
How many bacterial strains are in the NCTC collection?
The NCTC collection, which is certified to BS EN ISO 9001:2008, supplies over 6000 type and reference bacterial strains – many of medical, scientific and veterinary importance worldwide.
Is the NCTC the same as the ATCC?
NCTC equivalents to ATCC bacterial strains. The National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC) has many bacterial strains equivalent to the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) bacterial strains.
What are the uses of the NCTC collection?
In addition to bacterial strains for research studies, NCTC provides new and established control strains for use in clinical diagnostic testing, microbiological assessments of food, water and environmental samples, and the quality control of culture media.
How are type strains used in culture collections?
Type strains serve as fixed reference points for the assignment of bacterial names. They are cultured from the original isolates used in species and subspecies descriptions, as defined by the Bacteriological Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria. It is mandatory for type strains to be deposited in recognised culture collections such as NCTC.
