The microKorg XL is a great-sounding and highly playable synth. No-one else makes a synth like this besides Korg. The only sticking point is the price, as Korg has taken this opportunity to ‘enhance’ that too. At over £400, the bargain fun element of the mK has been reduced somewhat.

They’re both different Virtual Analog sound engines. The one in the microKorg is essentially the same one as the one created for the Korg MS2000. The engine in the microKorg XL is derived from the Radias and R3 series. While they don’t sound wildly different, they are not the same sounding synth.

I think the MicroKorg-S is really only worth $300 considering it’s an old design and more could have been improved to balance out the price, but it’s a decently fun synth! I find it useful for coming up with sounds quickly and is highly mobile and lightweight.
