Can you grow onions under a grow light?
Onions can be started under artificial lights with no problem but they need to be planted outside after 10-12 weeks to get anything useful from them other than just greens.
Why does my onion plant have a bulb on top?
Bulbs atop your onions means they’ve launched into the process of flowering and setting seed. If you purposely didn’t harvest last year and overwintered them instead, this is normal. If this is their first growing season, that flower stalk is premature. This is called bolting.
Do onion plants need sun or shade?

In a typical 12 week growing season, we recommend irrigating with one inch of water once or twice a week depending on the amount of rainfall received.

One onion grows per onion plant. There is one variety of onion known as the potato onion, or multiplier onion, that grows around 5 onions per plant. The potato onion is classified scientifically as Allium cepa var. aggregatum, and is more closely related to the shallot or garlic than most onions.
How do you know when to pick onions?
There is no perfect size, just pull when they are big enough to suit you. For full-sized bulbs, let onions grow and mature. They are ready to harvest when the bulbs are big and the tops begin to turn yellow and fall over. Pull them up, shake off the soil, and lay them out to cure with the tops still attached.
Should I cover onions as they grow?
I group my seedlings together in groups of 2 or 3 and have great results. Once you’ve planted all of the onions, cover up the rows with soil and tamp down lightly. Don’t push too hard. Everything that you plant in the garden needs some breathing room, even seeds.
