What is a Japanese Yari?
Yari (槍) is the term for a traditionally-made Japanese blade (nihonto) in the form of a spear, or more specifically, the straight-headed spear. The martial art of wielding the yari is called sōjutsu.

The major difference of Yari from Naginata is its form, the Yari looking like a straight-headed spear. The Yari is made of a straight blade instead of the curved blade used in Naginata. During the year of battles and wars, like Naginata, it has also been used by samurai and foot soldiers in addition to their armor.

Height. The common height of the yari varies by wielder: The samurai usually used yari measuring one to three meters on average (3.3 to 9.9 feet). The ashigaru usually used yari measuring anywhere from four to six meters(13.2 to 20 feet).
Are Yari Samurai good?
In melee, yari samurai are skilled warriors that perform well against all but the best infantry troops. However, they have no defence against missile attacks, lacking the mobility to move quickly out of range.

Is Naginata better than Katana?
Giving 5 armor to a Katana Samurai, or 6 attack to a Naginata Sam makes them roughly stat wise the same, with what I believe is a clear edge to the Naginata due to extra points in defence. Naginata would be the better choice for land battles as they would get the bonus against mounted and be amazing in melee, BUT!

How do you counter yari samurai?
Yari ashigaru in yari wall beat yari samurai! Otherwise the best unit in the entire game is bow warrior monks. Use them with a yari frontline and win. Naginata are best but that’s kinda late game.
