What is cellophane maculopathy?
Cellophane maculopathy refers to a membrane present at the surface of the retina overlying or surrounding the foveal pit.
What causes cellophane maculopathy?
As the name suggests, it is caused by distortion or “squeezing” of the macula. The condition is sometimes called “cellophane maculopathy,” because it can be caused by a thin, transparent layer of cellophane-like scar tissue tugging on the neurons of the macula.
What is cellophane reflex?
Cellophane macular reflex denotes a thin transparent membrane overlying the macula. Because this membrane does not distort the retina, it typically does not cause visual impairment; therefore, cellophane macular reflex can be an incidental finding on routine clinical examination.
How does epiretinal membrane affect vision?
Most epiretinal membranes are mild and have little or no effect on vision. However, in some cases, the epiretinal membrane may slowly grow and begin to cause mechanical distortion (“wrinkling”) in the macula. This may lead to blurred or distorted vision, which may slowly worsen over time.
Can you go blind from macular pucker?
Vision loss from a macular pucker can vary from no loss to severe loss, although severe vision loss is uncommon. People with a macular pucker may notice that their vision is blurry or mildly distorted, and straight lines can appear wavy.
Can Maculopathy be cured?
There are no cures for maculopathy, but treatment may slow progression for some types of disease.
How long does it take to recover from epiretinal membrane?
The macular pucker surgery recovery time can vary from between three to six months. Healing occurs gradually over this time, with most people regaining about half of the vision lost from a macular pucker.

What are the risks if left untreated? For most with a macular pucker, their vision remains stable and does not get progressively worse. Macular pucker usually doesn’t fix itself. Macular pucker usually affects one eye, although later it may affect the other eye.
Will macular pucker heal itself?
Sometimes the scar tissue that causes the macular pucker separates from the retina, and the macular pucker heals on its own. If you notice a change in your vision, it’s important to contact your eye doctor right away.
