Can I drive my car without a WoF?
It’s illegal to drive your car without a valid WOF, or a valid WOF sticker displayed. You can only drive the vehicle (if it is safe to do so) when driving to get it repaired, or to get a WOF inspection done. Your vehicle will be re-inspected on the spot, and your WOF issued.
How long does a warrant of fitness last?
A WoF is valid for 12 months in New Zealand. When your WoF expires, you have 28 days to get your vehicle inspected and brought back to compliance requirements. During this time window, you cannot drive your vehicle freely on the road, except for taking it to the authorised service centre for WoF.
What happens if you fail a warrant of fitness?
If your vehicle fails a WoF inspection and your old WoF has expired, you are not permitted by law to drive it on the road unless it is being operated solely for the purpose of obtaining a new WoF. If you exceed the 28 days from the initial inspection, a new fee and inspection is required.
