What is zonisamide used to treat?
Zonisamide is used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of seizures. Zonisamide is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Does zonisamide make you sleepy?
Zonisamide (Zonegran) can cause you to become sleepy. Be careful driving or doing anything that could be dangerous until you know how this medication affects you. Try to avoid anything else that could cause you to become sleepy such as narcotic pain medications, allergy medications, and alcohol.

How long does it take for zonisamide to get in your system?
Peak plasma levels of zonisamide are reached 2 to 4 hours after the capsules are taken. (These levels are 2 to 5 micrograms per milliliter if two to four 100-mg capsules are used.) If the capsules are taken with food, peak levels are not reached for 4 to 6 hours, but the availability of the medication is not affected.

Therefore, use of this drug in human pregnancy may expose the fetus to significant risk. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy.
