AFS students are required to meet a high standard of qualifications to be accepted by the AFS office in their home country, as well as by AFS-USA. They must: be between 15-18.6 years old on arrival. demonstrate a commitment to academic motivation and possess solid grades.

Young adults – 18 and older – work as a volunteer in a community service organization or business abroad while learning skills, a new language and culture. Most programs are for a semester (4-6 months). Some AFS Partner countries also offer programs for teachers.

Is it expensive to be an exchange student?

Being an exchange student can be expensive. Along with what you must pay to your organization to cover travel fees, you will typically require some spending money. Your exchange organization should provide insurance, a flight, and a travel visa, also finding you a place to live and a school to attend.

Do you get paid to be a host family?

Hosts are paid in a two-week cycle, with funds transferred directly into the host’s nominated bank account. We handle all the payments to prevent disputes and protect the student from any arrangement that might compromise his or her health and safety while in a trusted homestay environment.
