Is DFS Replication suitable for replicating roaming profiles?
Generally speaking, using DFSR to replicate user roaming profiles isn’t a good idea. This will cause some potential inconsistent issue.
What is DFSR and DFSN?
DFSN is for creating transparent connectivity between shared folders located on different servers and DFSR is for replicating files. Historically , a common configuration we have seen with DFSN is replication of the actual namespace root, replicating a namespace root folder can cause weirdness.
What is DFS mapping?
The Distributed File System (DFS) functions provide the ability to logically group shares on multiple servers and to transparently link shares into a single hierarchical namespace. DFS organizes shared resources on a network in a treelike structure. Each DFS link points to one or more shared folders on the network.
What are the types of DFS?
There are two types of DFS:
- DFS Namespace: a virtual tree aggregating shared folders from the entire network. Administrators can set up multiple DFS Namespaces.
- DFS Replication: creates replicated shared folder with scheduling and bandwidth throttling configured by the administrator.
What is DFS Replication?
DFS Replication enables you to replicate folders between multiple servers. To allow efficient use of the network, it propagates only the changes, uses compression, and uses scheduling to replicate the data between the servers. A replication group can have up to 256 members with 256 replicated folders.
What is my DFS root?
DFS root is an object in the Microsoft Active Directory system used for sharing files and folders across network. DFS root is an object which consolidates your network shared folders and makes them available to network users as a single entry point.
What is Microsoft DFS R?
The Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) service is a new multi-master replication engine that is used to keep folders synchronized on multiple servers. Replicating data to multiple servers increases data availability and gives users in remote sites fast, reliable access to files.
What does DFS stand for?

What are the advantages of DFS?
Advantages of DFS
- Faster Restarts and Better Reliability.
- Better Recovery from Failure.
- Improved File Availability, Access Time, and Network Efficiency.
- Efficient Load Balancing and File Location Transparency.
- Extended Permissions.
- Increased Interoperability and Scalability.
- Increased Security and Administrative Flexibility.
Why do we need DFS?
The main purpose of the Distributed File System (DFS) is to allows users of physically distributed systems to share their data and resources by using a Common File System. A collection of workstations and mainframes connected by a Local Area Network (LAN) is a configuration on Distributed File System.
Is DFS replication two way?
DFS Replication uses a compression algorithm known as remote differential compression (RDC). In the figure, there are two replicated folders: Projects and Proposals. As the data changes in each replicated folder, the changes are replicated across connections between the members of the replication group.
Where are user home folders stored in DFS-R?
When you deploy DFS-R and DFS-N together with user home folders or with roaming user profiles, the following scenario is not supported by Microsoft: You deploy a single file server for each branch office. User home folders and roaming user profiles of users in the branch office are stored on the branch office file server.
How is DFS-R deployed in a branch office?
You deploy a single file server for each branch office. User home folders and roaming user profiles of users in the branch office are stored on the branch office file server. You use DFS-R over WAN links from multiple branch office file servers to a central hub server for centralized backup.
How to use DFS-R over WAN links?
You use DFS-R over WAN links from multiple branch office file servers to a central hub server for centralized backup. You configure the hub server with read-only replicated folders or read/write replicated folders. You configure a DFS namespace to create a unified namespace.
Why do I have an issue with DFS-R?
This issue occurs because DFS-R is a multi-master replication engine that uses a conflict-resolution heuristic of last writer wins for files that are in conflict. If the replicated folder of the central file server is a read-only replica, one of the following issues may occur:
