Is 20CV the same as M390?
Resulting Properties We have done a couple comparisons between the toughness of similar steels from different manufacturers, such as Bohler M390 and Crucible 20CV. In that case the toughness was essentially identical, the small difference is probably just due to experimental variability.
What steel is better than M390?
S30V is high-end steel made by US Crucible and enjoys high popularity in the knife manufacturing industry. Compared to M390, this steel offers lower wear resistance and edge retention. Sharpening S30V is much easier than M390 steel. But both steels have the same level of corrosion resistance and toughness.

The Rockwell hardness of CPM 20CV is 59 – 61 HRC. That is just slightly harder, and has the same toughness as 440C, which is a benchmark steel for knives. 20CV has five times the wear resistance of 440C, and has 30% more corrosion resistance.
Is 20CV better than S90V?
CPM 20CV vs S90V S90V is also a super steel material from Crucible. So, both ensure extremely good edge retention. Nevertheless, S90V is a bit better at resisting wear. On the other hand, CPM 20CV is relatively easier to sharpen and is better at resistance to rust and corrosion.
