Raja Baldev Singh (r. 1892–1918), who succeeded Moti Singh, complained in 1895 that Jammu and Kashmir started referring to Poonch as a jagir, whereas he maintained that it was a ‘state’. This was apparently a very emotive issue for Baldev Singh and, subsequently, to the residents of Poonch.
