What is an NHS walk-in Centre?
NHS ‘walk-in centres’ are usually managed by nurses and are available to everyone. Some also offer access to doctors. No appointment is needed, though there may be a bit of a wait to be seen. Most centres are open every day and outside office hours.
What is out of hours GP?
The NHS pledges to provide services at a time that’s convenient for you. Outside normal surgery hours you can still phone your GP surgery, but you’ll usually be directed to an out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours period is from 6.30pm to 8am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.

GPs provide a range of services including medical advice, examinations, prescriptions and care for long term conditions, chronic pain and persistent symptoms. Out of hours, a call to 111 will direct you to out of hours doctors and care.

Severe COVID-19 symptoms to watch include: Shortness of breath while at rest. Dry cough, fever, breathing getting more difficult. Significant or worrisome cough that is increasing. Confusion or sudden change in mental status.

Can a doctor refuse a home visit?
Unless the GP’s register is full, or you live too far away for home visits, it is unlikely that the GP will refuse to accept you. However, if the GP does refuse to accept you, then they must have reasonable grounds for doing so. The GP must give you the reasons for their decision in writing.
