Do I need to replace freeze plugs?
Once the water melts, the coolant will start to leak from the freeze plug. Over time, the corrosion will break down the seal, allowing the plug to leak. Rubber plugs, which are commonly used for quick repairs, breakdown over time from the heat cycles. They have to be replaced as soon as they start leaking.
What is the purpose for freeze plugs?
Core plugs, also called freeze plugs or Welch plugs, are used to fill the sand casting core holes found on water-cooled internal combustion engines.
What are expansion plugs used for?
Definition: Concave expansion plugs are inexpensive, efficient, and are a permanent method of sealing manufactured holes in castings or other processes. These are good for use in limited space (depth) holes, but do require a counterbored hole to locate properly.
What do brass freeze plugs do?
Don’t forget what the purpose of the plug is. The plug should be a softer metal than the block surrounding it. The plug will colapse if ice forms in the block saving it from cracking. That’s why most people use brass.
Can you drive a car with a bad freeze plug?
If you have no other option, you may be able to drive with a bad freeze plug. As long as you keep your engine coolant full and your engine never gets hot, you could limp your car along with a leaking freeze plug although we never recommend it. It’s messy and at any point could leak to your engine overheating.
Will Stop leak fix a leaking freeze plug?
If the leak is slow and small, a stop leak or block seal compound might work. However, this is usually a temporary solution at best – it might not work, might not last for long, and could clog up something else in your cooling system. The right way to fix it is to replace the freeze plug.
Can leaking freeze plug cause overheating?
If you neglect a leaking freeze plug for too long, your engine’s coolant could potentially leak to a level where it can no longer effectively cool your engine, and cause it to overheat, risking extensive damage.

How do you change a freeze plug?
Re: how to change freeze plug. The easiest way to remove it is to use a flat or small round drift pin punch. Just catch the edge of the freeze plug and tap it until it turns sideways. Then reach in with some pliers and grab it and remove it. If you can get a brass plug to replace it do so. The brass plugs last longer.
Can I reuse a freeze plug?
Place a socket inside of the freeze plug. Tap the socket with a hammer to drive the plug into the hole in the engine block. Note: The socket should be as close to size of the inside of the freeze plug as possible. Refill the engine with coolant. You can reuse your old coolant if it is still clean.
How do you install a freeze plug?
Push the freeze plug straight into the hole and tap it gently around the circumference to hold it in place. Insert the installer socket with the extension in the center of the freeze plug and tap it in. Keep the plug straight and stop when the edge of the freeze plug is 1/16 of an inch below the block housing.
