What was found in M87?
M87, in full Messier 87, also called Virgo A or NGC4486, giant elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo whose nucleus contains a black hole, the first ever to be directly imaged. M87 is the most powerful known source of radio energy among the thousands of galactic systems constituting the so-called Virgo Cluster.
Why is it called M87?
The French astronomer Charles Messier discovered M87 in 1781, and cataloged it as a nebula. M87 is about 16.4 million parsecs (53 million light-years) from Earth and is the second-brightest galaxy within the northern Virgo Cluster, having many satellite galaxies.
Is the M87 visible?
It has an apparent magnitude of 9.6 and can be observed using a small telescope most easily in May. This Hubble image of M87 is a composite of individual observations in visible and infrared light.
Can you see M87 galaxy?
On dark moonless nights, M87 is visible with 7×50 or 10×50 binoculars, appearing as a faint hazy patch of light. This galaxy was one of eight discovered by Charles Messier on March 18, 1781….M87 Data Table.

How fast is M87 spinning?
Messier 87, star of the first image of the black hole , is spinning between 2.4 to 6.3 times faster than the speed of light . According to the laws of physics, the speed of light is the universal speed limit.

Is M87 a black hole?
The supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy M87 is coming into sharper and sharper focus. Two years ago, astronomers with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project unveiled imagery of that black hole, which lies 55 million light-years from Earth and is as massive as 6.5 billion suns.
What is the biggest black hole?
They can fit multiple solar systems inside of them. Ton 618, the largest ultramassive black hole, appears at the very end of the video, which, at 66 billion times the mass of the Sun, is going to weigh very heavily on how we daydream about the cosmos moving forward.
Is light faster than a black hole?
Astronomers agreed that the black hole was spinning really fast, but obviously not as faster than the speed of light — the universal speed limit. “One of the unbreakable laws of physics is that nothing can move faster than the speed of light,” said Brad Snios, another co-author of the study.
What is 1% the speed of light?
He estimated the speed of light at 185,000 miles per second (301,000 km/s) — accurate to within about 1% of the real value, according to the American Physical Society.
