The one item found on the new eTrex series missing from all other Garmin units is the ability to use GLONASS as well as GPS satellites. There is an option to use GPS only, but no option for GLONASS only. Theoretically, GLONASS will improve accuracy. This may be especially true at northerly latitudes and in urban (and natural) canyons.
What can you use the eTrex 30 compass for?
You can use the compass to navigate towards a pre-set waypoint. The eTrex 30 will give you a bearing for the waypoint and tell you how far away it is. The barometer can be used either to track changes in atmospheric pressure or to measure your altitude.
Is the eTrex 30 waterproof in the rain?
A handheld GPS unit must be capable of use in all weathers: indeed the eTrex 30 has an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning it can withstand up to 30 minutes of immersion in water one metre deep. Judging by my experience trying to use my mobile phone in the rain, a touch screen becomes a liability in wet conditions.
