Is Ikea Expedit same as KALLAX?
Design. Some Ikea fans experienced a shock recently when the furniture company announced it was discontinuing its extremely popular Expedit series of shelves. What many Expedit-lovers seem to have missed in the commotion is a second announcement by Ikea that it’s replacing the shelves with a new line, the Kallax.
Are Expedit and KALLAX the same size?
The 2×2 Kallax is 77cm, which is a whole 5mm taller than the equivalent EXPEDIT. That is half a centimetre of wasted space.
Is Expedit stronger than KALLAX?
It’s the same unit rotated and with a different base. The unit is much stronger than the kallax and expedit. Trust me, no matter which way you orient it, it’s going to be more than strong enough.

Like many of you mentioned in the comments, the KALLAX is a slight tweak on the beloved shelving system: a more scratch-resistant surface, slightly rounded corners, and thinner outer boards, but the same internal dimensions (see the full side-by-side image after the jump).
