What is a DClinPsy?
The degree of Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy/DClinPsych/ClinPsyD) is a professional doctorate in clinical psychology, awarded mainly in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In Ireland doctoral programmes in Clinical Psychology are accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
How long is a DClinPsy?

The programme runs over three years, and consists of a formal teaching programme for 2 days per week during University term and 3-4 days per week of supervised clinical practice within the health service or related mental or physical healthcare provider organisation.
How hard is DClinPsy?
It might seem like stating the obvious, but if you struggle academically then the D. Clin. Psy. will be tough – the course involves a lot more independent study than an undergraduate course and culminates in a thesis which is typically 100,000 words, so most people find it a big step up.
How many DClinPsy courses can you apply for?
At first sight this makes it look quite tough to get into UCL, but remember that each applicant can apply to four courses, so some of the people who were not taken on by us will have found places elsewhere.
What is the difference between PhD and DClinPsy?
Like a PhD, the clinical doctorate also involves a research thesis and an oral examination, but this research is on a much smaller scale than a PhD and constitutes only one part of DClinPsy training, which also involves clinical practice and other academic work. (More information here.)
Can you do a doctorate without a Masters?
Yes, it’s possible to get a PhD without first having a Masters degree. However, several students opt to bypass a Master’s degree by enrolling onto a doctoral programme as soon as they complete their undergraduate degree.
Do you get paid to do DClinPsy?
Training on the Sheffield DClinPsy programme involves a dual status as a postgraduate student of the University and an NHS employee. The NHS, via our local commissioners funds all tuition fees and pays trainee salaries for home trainees. This is considered as a new post even if previously employed by the NHS.
