Why is my aquarium gurgling?
The sucking, gurgling sound is the result of all the draining water trying to suck in air as it flows down the drain tube. This technique simulates the regulation of air that is the key to silencing draining water like the Durso/Stockman overflow modification.
What is a Durso?
The Durso drain is a trendy way to plumb your overflow that helps with noise reduction. The Durso standpipe has a small vent hole on the top elbow that prevents a siphon from forming in the drain pipe. A single vented standpipe such as the Durso drain does not handle high flow rates very well.
How can I make my Durso quieter?
Water/air mix exiting the drain can cause noise. This can be reduced by use of filter socks or a “bubble box”. If all of this has been done and it still makes “toilet” flushing sound, reduce the return pump flow to the DT till the sound is gone. Hope this helps, but remember durso’s are never completely quite.
