This elusive wood is so rare that it is typically found in only one out of every 400 or so logs we mill. Curly Heart Pine is often a highly sought-after species for those with an artistic eye. It features extremely curly burled grain, luminous vibrant color and appears both holographic and topographic when milled.
What makes Curly pine?
Curly Heart Pine is a burled grain variation found in some longleaf heart pine and Dade County pine trees. It typically occurs most predominantly at the junction of heartwood and sap wood. This distinctive grain pattern makes it a rare and unique treasure, and our most expensive product.
How do you identify heart pine?
To tell if the wood is genuine heart pine, you look at the grains per inch and the color. There should be 6 grains per inch, which you can see on the end of the plank. And the color of heart pine is darker and more consistent along the entire length of the wood.

Heart Pine is the heartwood of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) tree. Because of properties particular to this species of pine, Heart Pine wood is extremely hard, strong, and stable, making it an excellent wood for flooring. Why is heart pine so expensive?
Because it is a scarce antique, heart pine installed and finished will cost you more per square foot than the standard oak floor. Several manufacturers are making a three-quarter-inch-thick laminated flooring that has a thick-wear layer of heart pine over other hardwood cores.

Curly maple figuring is similar to quilted maple, but curl is a primarily horizontal pattern perpendicular to the wood grain. Unlike quilted maple, curly maple is most pronounced when the board is quartersawn, and the curls usually become much less pronounced or absent in flatsawn sections of boards.
