No, tickets are not required to visit the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. As of July 20, 2021, passes are no longer required to visit. All passes issued for July 21–August 15 will be canceled and will not be scanned at entry.
When did the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian open?
After a renovation under the direction of Lloyd E. Herman it opened in 1972 as the home of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s contemporary craft program. The Renwick Gallery is now a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, housing the museum’s collection of decorative art and crafts.
Why was the Renwick Gallery at the White House built?
The gallery, located across from the White House, due to the proximity, was seized for war efforts (storage of supplies for the Union troops). At the end of the war in April 1965, Renwick maintained construction, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art was completed.
