GO LARGE IN FLOODS. If the river is high and coloured then a big bait is going to score best for chub. Go for a matchbox-sized lump of meat, a paste-wrapped boilie, a big lump of cheesepaste or steak. Anything, as long as it is big and smelly, will put you in with a good chance of success.
What bait do I use for chub?
Chub will go for virtually any bait, such as maggots and worms (providing there are not too many smaller fish to steal the bait first) but many anglers swear by bread in all its forms as well as cheese either on its own or mixed up with breadcrumbs to produce a strongly flavoured paste.

Chub love surface and shallow running lures and small floating crank baits are my number one choice. There are so many to choose from but my starter for ten is the Fox Funk Bug in the 4cm Shallow Runner or 5cm Deep Runner.
Do chub eat bread?
Best chub baits: Bread flake I recommend bread flake or its partner, popped up bread crust as chub love them both. Try feeding a bit or mashed bread into the swim first to get them looking for it, before flicking out your hookbait. Chub can be tempted on a big mouthful, too, so don’t be shy in the portion size.

I’ve found fishing after sunset to be much better for chub, especially if the water is very clear, and the secret to catching chub after dark or in coloured water is to use a stinky bait like cheesepaste. So, don’t fear the dark, the chub will still feed, you just need something they can sniff out!

The chub will quicken a little, move in behind the plug as it wobbles across the surface, then grab it. It is all over very quickly. Come wintertime they are like lay-bys on the motor way, the motor way being the hard-flowing river. This is where the chub will also sit at times, right under the bank, and the harder the flow the fewer there are of these spots. There are normally two or three spots like this on any decent stretch of river.
What’s the best bait to use with chub?
Anything, as long as it is big and smelly, will put you in with a good chance of success. Forget about loosefeeding in these conditions and stick to just the hookbait. Chub are suckers for light prebaiting in the days leading up to your fishing. I can’t think of any species that responds so quickly to an easy meal.
What kind of worms do you use for chub?
Lobworms can often be difficult to get hold of in the winter, just when they come into their own for chub. Dendrobaena worms are a poor substitute, but try several on the hook or, better still, a large maggot clip, and your results will improve.

If one species can be relied upon above all others to keep providing brilliant sport right through the winter it has to be chub. Whether the rivers are low and clear, or high and murky, chub can be caught, although you have to be on top of your tactics to score consistently.
