How do I know what size nib to get?
As a rule of thumb, most are usually between a 0.5mm and a 0.7mm line, with the Eastern (Japanese) nibs being on the finer end and the Western (Italian, & German) nibs being on the thicker end. Going with a fine point is still better suited for smaller, more deliberate handwriting styles.
What is the most common nib size?
Medium (M) is the most popular nib width. Although this does vary this is usually around 0.6mm in width. This is also the standard nib width on most brands. Broad (B) has a broader writing line than medium.
What size is a #5 nib?
The #5 nibs fit on a 5mm diameter feed, while the #6 nibs fit on a 6mm diameter feed. For a #5 nib, expect about 19mm to stick out from the section and a maximum nib width of about 7mm. On the #6 nibs the length sticking out will be around 25mm, and the maximum width across the shoulders will be about 9mm.
Do all nibs fit all pens?
Not all fountain pen nibs are interchangeable. Typically, modern sized #4, #5 or #6 nibs will fit into some fountain pen models, but that is not true with all models. Some brands have made their nibs interchangeable, but only with their models.
