Can the army make you redundant?
The level and type of compensation due to you on redundancy will depend on which of the Armed Forces Redundancy Schemes is appropriate to your individual terms of service and the date of your discharge under redundancy. Broadly, there are two redundancy schemes that may apply to those in the Regular Armed Forces.
Can I claim my army pension at 55?
Your pension can be paid from age 55. It is also possible to access benefits earlier via the payment of an early departure payment (EDP) if you have at least 18 years of service and have reached age 40.

Is my military lump sum taxable?
Payments will always include a lump sum amount which is tax free. If your injury or ill health makes it more difficult for you to find employment outside of the armed forces you will also receive a Guaranteed Income Payment (GIP). The GIP is a regular payment; it is paid for life and is tax free.
When you leave the army do you still get paid?
You are authorized to get a cash payment for any unused leave when you separate from the military if you are retiring or separating with an honorable discharge. You are authorized 1/30 of your basic pay for each day of leave you sell back.
Can you cash in your army pension early?
Each AFPS does, however, allow preserved/deferred pensions to be drawn early, with actuarial reductions – that means they are reduced to take account of the fact that they are in payment for longer than would otherwise be the case. For AFPS 75, the part of the pension payable at age 65 may be drawn at 60.
How many years do you have to serve in the army to get a pension?

You’ll need to serve 20 years or more to qualify for the lifetime monthly annuity. Your retirement benefit is determined by your years of service. It’s calculated at 2.5% times your highest 36 months of basic pay.
Can I get a lump sum from my army pension?
You will also receive a one-off lump sum of 3 times your annual pension. The lump sum is normally tax-free. If you are under age 55 when you leave and have completed at least 16 years qualifying service from age 21 (Officers) or 22 years qualifying service from age 18.
What is military resettlement?
The resettlement programme is designed to help personnel leaving the armed forces to prepare for entering the civilian job market and to make a successful transition to employment, or achieve the wider vocational outcome they seek.
What is a resettlement grant?
The RG is a tax-free lump sum intended to help Regular Service personnel settle into civilian life. If individuals reach a point where they receive either a pension payable straight away or EDP benefits, or they are discharged with a Tier 1 ill-health lump sum, they do not receive the RG.

When do you have to give notice for redundancy?
You must be given a notice period before your employment ends. The statutory redundancy notice periods are: at least one week’s notice if employed between one month and 2 years one week’s notice for each year if employed between 2 and 12 years
Do you get pay in lieu of redundancy?
Check your contract. Your employer may give you more than the statutory minimum, but they cannot give you less. As well as statutory redundancy pay, your employer should either: pay you in lieu of notice depending on your circumstances Your notice pay is based on the average you earned per week over the 12 weeks before your notice period starts.
What happens at the end of the redundancy period?
You’ll also keep any work benefits, such as pension contributions or personal use of a company phone. Your job won’t end until the end of your notice period, even though you don’t have to come to work. This will increase your redundancy pay if it means you’ll have completed another full year with your employer.
What happens to maternity pay if you are made redundant?
Your statutory maternity pay continues if you’re made redundant – find out more about redundancy and maternity pay. You’ll get your normal full pay as long as you’re at work. If you’re away from work in your notice period you’ll get what you’d normally have been paid for that absence.
