Is herpes really an STD?
Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that any sexually active person can get. Most people with the virus don’t have symptoms. Even without signs of the disease, herpes can still be spread to sex partners.
How do people get herpes?
The herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes genital herpes. HSV spreads through vaginal, oral and anal sex. You can also get HSV from kissing or close (skin-to-skin) contact with someone who has open sores.
Can herpes go away?
Herpes has no cure. But antiviral medicines can prevent or shorten outbreaks during the time you take the medicine. Also, daily suppressive therapy (for example, daily use of antiviral medicine) for herpes can lower your chance of spreading the infection to your partner.
Can I give herpes to my child by kissing?
Herpes can only be passed through direct skin-to-skin contact with the infected area such as kissing, oral sex, genital-to-genital rubbing, vaginal, and anal sex. Herpes (both oral & genital) can be spread even when there are no symptoms or sores. This is called asymptomatic shedding.
Can HSV 1 be cured?
Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are part of a larger family of herpesviruses. They are very common — affecting about 90% of adults worldwide — and can cause painful ulcers in or around the mouth or genitals. Unfortunately, there is no cure for HSV infections, and people need to manage their outbreaks with medications.

Initial herpes outbreaks usually last between two to six weeks, while recurrent ones resolve a lot faster. Recurrent outbreaks should heal within a few weeks or sooner.
How long can you live with herpes?
People who contract HSV will have the virus for the rest of their lives. Even if it does not manifest symptoms, the virus will continue to live in nerve cells. Some people may experience regular outbreaks. Others will only experience one outbreak after they contract the virus, and then the virus may become dormant.
Does everyone have herpes?
The American Sexual Health Association estimates that roughly half of all adults in the United States have oral herpes. Oral herpes is usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Not everyone has symptoms, but oral herpes can cause cold sores or blisters around the mouth.
