Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino founded a dance company together in 1956. Arpino was struggling to pay his dancers, and nearly out of options. Moving the company to Chicago was an act of desperation — a last-ditch effort to keep the Joffrey Ballet from a total collapse — and the transition wasn’t seamless.
