How do I find VCAT cases?
VCAT decisions are public and can be read by anyone. You can search for decisions on the Australiasian Legal Information Institute (Austlii) website.
What are the lists in VCAT?
VCAT has four divisions: Civil, Administrative, Residential Tenancies and Human Rights. Within these divisions, the various types of matters are allocated to what are referred to as ‘Lists’.
Are VCAT hearings public?
VCAT hearings are generally open to the public, including media.
How long does a VCAT order last?
We only hold exhibits for up to three months after the final decision. You must arrange for the return or collection of any exhibits that VCAT does not have to keep on file. If they are not collected within the timeframe, we may dispose of them.
How do I get a copy of my VCAT decision?
You will need to complete and submit the Media request form. We contact you to take payment. If the decision has not been listed ‘for collection’, but is sent to parties by email or post, the Strategic Communications team can let you know when it will be available.

What do you need to know about a VCAT case?
Someone applies to VCAT to resolve a dispute or make a decision. If we’re able to accept the application, we open a case. Everyone involved in a case (called ‘parties’) needs to prepare to come to VCAT. There are documents to organise and things to do as part of the legal process.
