Why is Queen Victoria building famous?
Affectionately known as the QVB, the building was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. But another Queen has associations with the building. On display you can see a sealed letter from Queen Elizabeth II to the citizens of Sydney.
How was the Queen Victoria Building saved from demolition?
Saving the QVB In 1980, the council accepted a bid by the Malaysian developer Ipoh Garden Berhad to restore the building on a 99-year profit-sharing lease. Restoration was a major undertaking, requiring the demolition of internal accretions including offices, floors and partitions, to restore it to its former glory.

The Queen Victoria Building, now affectionately known as the QVB, was built in 1898 and designed by 28 year old architect George McRae, replacing the original Sydney markets on the site.
