What causes prop chatter?
The chatter you are feeling is the prop trying to bite and your motor mounts are taking the shock. On some motors we have had to wedge a piece of wood between the saddle and the tower housing. The higher you raise the motor and the bigger the prop, the worse the “Chatter” will get.
What is Yamaha SDS?
Yamaha has improved its Shift Dampener System (SDS) and expanded its availability to include seven propeller lines that will fit any Yamaha outboard from 50 to 350 horsepower. SDS is designed to eliminate the “clunk” sound of the outboard shifting from neutral into forward or reverse gear.
Should there be play in my prop shaft?
There should be no play while trying to push the prop/shaft forward or pulling it aft. If there is up and down movement or side to side movement then something is loose or the cutless bearings are worn. If the prop is moving forward or aft on the shaft then something is wrong there too.

You cant over torque the prop nut. If you cant get it to align for the cotter pin to go in use another washer behined the nut or slightly sand the back side of the castle nut.

Proper installation begins by installing the half nut first and tightening it just snug enough to “preload” the half nut onto the shaft against the prop hub. Tight but not with all your weight on it.
