How do you size an O ring?
To find this measurement, lay your o-ring on a flat surface. Use a ruler to measure from one inner edge of the o-ring across to the inner edge. Depending on the size of your o-ring, the ID may be recorded in inches or millimeters. This will help determine how large of an opening your seal should have.

Does O-ring thickness matter?
For all applications, O-rings with a larger cross- sectional diameter tend to have better resistance to compression set. They also have less volume swell in fluids and are less likely to leak if their surface is scratched.
How tight should an O-ring be?
To provide an effective seal, the O-ring’s inside diameter (I.D.) must be smaller than the piston groove diameter, so that the O-ring is slightly stretched, fitting snugly in the groove. This stretch should be between 1%-5% with 2% as the ideal in most applications. A stretch greater than 5% is not recommended.
