What is Morcellation of prostate?
We reviewed the safety and efficacy of devices called morcellators. These devices cut tissue into small pieces that are easier to remove from the body, and are used during laser surgery for benign enlargement of the prostate.
What is laser enucleation prostate with Morcellation?
The laser is inserted into the resectoscope and is used to enucleate (free up) the enlarged prostate tissue from the capsule (outer shell)and then to seal up any blood vessels. The tissue that has been removed is deposited in the bladder. The laser is removed from the resectoscope and is replaced by a morcellator.
Is HoLEP a major surgery?
HoLEP (Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for men with any degree of prostate enlargement who have urinary symptoms, and men who are suffering from retention of urine, repeated urine infections or bleeding due to their enlarged prostate.
Is morcellation still used?
Due to this increased risk, the FDA continues to recommend use of laparoscopic power morcellation only in appropriate women undergoing myomectomy or hysterectomy. In addition, the FDA recommends that when morcellation is appropriate, only contained morcellation be performed.
How long does incontinence last after HoLEP?
TUI, defined as any type of urine leakage, occurred after HoLEP in some patients (16.6%). However, most of these recovered within three months.
Does prostate grow back after HoLEP?
It is very unlikely that the prostate will regrow after HoLEP (0.7% need a re-operation up to 10yr after HoLEP compared to 10-15% after TURP, and more after green light laser surgery). After HoLEP, the area of the prostate that is removed is sent for microscopic analysis.
Is in bag morcellation safe?
Tissue morcellation during laparoscopic hysterectomy carries the risk of spreading cells from unsuspected malignancy. Contained morcellation inside a bag is supposed to minimize this risk.
