What inspired me in 2009, an industrial designer in New Zealand, to create life-sized native bird silhouettes out of metal?
Does Metalbird hurt the tree?
Our original birds are a decade old and the trees are showing no long-term damage whatsoever. The spike on our birds is driven firmly in with little room to allow infection. Over time the tree will seal off around where the bird has been installed to protect itself from disease.

Does it damage a tree to put a nail in it?
Generally, no, something the size of a nail hammered into a tree won’t hurt it. The nail would most likely be inserted about an inch to an inch and a half into the bark. With such trees the nail could damage the tissues responsible for moving water and nutrients throughout the tree’s system.
