Are hood pins necessary?
nope not necessary at all especially on a stock hood with two working latches. they look cool though. I recommend the stick on appearance pins if you don’t want to drill holes into a perfectly good hood.

But did you know they actually serve an important purpose? These pins keep the hood buttoned down in the event the main latch should fail – preventing the hood panel from flying open at speed. This often happens after accidents, that’s why many racetracks require hood pins to be fitted on competition cars.

I, like many people, would prefer to not have hood pins, but most carbon fiber hood manufacturers recommend them since it is possible for your carbon fiber hood to fail and fly off your car!

You do not have to use hood pins. It is just a safety feature that you should consider. It is unlikely that it will pop up, but it could happen. I have driven cars with seibon hoods without pins before, just to go back and forth to get them installed though.

Are hood pins necessary for fiberglass hoods?
If you get a good quality hood, I wouldn’t worry too much about having pins. If it’s cheap, or the latch mechanism was fiberglass, then I’d definitely pin it. Just for reference, the SN95 factory hoods (96-98 for sure, and probably later years too) are fiberglass with a metal insert for the latch.
