What are some common characteristics of individuals with dissociative identity disorder?
Symptoms
- Memory loss (amnesia) of certain time periods, events, people and personal information.
- A sense of being detached from yourself and your emotions.
- A perception of the people and things around you as distorted and unreal.
- A blurred sense of identity.
Does a person with multiple personality disorder know they have it?
Usually those with a multiple personality, or dissociative identity disorder, will recognize that something is abnormal due to symptoms like amnesia but they may not realize it is due to having alters or personalities that are taking over to handle triggers or exposure to trauma.
Can someone with DID fully integrate?
The subjective experience of the person with DID is very real and the goal of treatment is to achieve fusion of each personality so the person can begin to function as an integrated whole.
How long do alters last?
Often alters are stable over time, continuing to play specific roles in the person’s life for years. Some alters may harbor aggressive tendencies, directed toward individuals in the person’s environment or toward other alters within the person.
At what age does DID develop?
The typical patient who is diagnosed with DID is a woman, about age 30. A retrospective review of that patient’s history typically will reveal onset of dissociative symptoms at ages 5 to 10, with emergence of alters at about the age of 6.
What is a gatekeeper in DID?
Gatekeeper: A gatekeeper is an alter who controls switching or access to front, access to inside or certain areas inside, or access to certain alters or memories. They can help to prevent traumatic memories from bleeding from the alters who hold them to alters who could not yet handle them.
How do I speak to my alters?
Some other useful hints for starting an inner dialogue with alters are as follows:
- Welcome Them. Make the first move and take an interest in the alter you are speaking with.
- Set Boundaries and Rules.
- Use Their Name.
- Offer to Help.
- Listen.
- Feel.
Do multiple personalities talk to each other?
Although not everyone experiences DID the same way, for some the “alters” or different identities have their own age, sex, or race. Each has their own postures, gestures, and distinct way of talking. Sometimes the alters are imaginary people; sometimes they are animals.
