What is RTD input module?
The RTD input module monitors the temperature signal from an RTD sensor within a fixed range. The RTD input module provides two channels for measuring the resistance of 2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire, 100-ohm, platinum RTD sensors with an alpha equal to 0.00385 or 0.00392 Ω/Ω/°C.
What do thermocouples do?
A thermocouple is a sensor that measures temperature. It consists of two different types of metals, joined together at one end. When the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled, a voltage is created that can be correlated back to the temperature.
What is RTD output?
An RTD is a passive device. It does not produce an output on its own. External electronic devices are used to measure the resistance of the sensor by passing a small electrical current through the sensor to generate a voltage. Typically 1 mA or less measuring current, 5 mA maximum without the risk of self-heating.

To connect a 4-wire PT100 sensor:

- Connect the two wires that go to the other end of the PT100 resistance element to terminals 3 and 4.
How does RTD module work?
An RTD works by using a basic principle; as the temperature of a metal increases, so does the resistance to the flow of electricity. As the temperature of the resistance element increases the electrical resistance also increases. The electrical resistance is measured in Ohms.
How does a four wire RTD transmitter work?
Finally, a four-wire RTD would connect to terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4 (terminals 1 and 2 being common, and terminals 3 and 4 being common, at the RTD). Once the RTD has been connected to the appropriate terminals of the temperature transmitter, the transmitter needs to be electronically configured for that type of RTD.
