What would cause no spark from distributor?

What would cause no spark from distributor?

Loss of spark is caused by anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. This includes worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad plug wires or a cracked distributor cap.

What if my ignition coil has power but no spark?

If the ignition coil does not have spark, it’s time to check its wires. Use a test light to check the continuity on the signal wire and power wire on the ignition coil. If both wires are functional but the coil fails to produce spark, the ignition coil or the ignition control module is bad.

How do you check a VW Beetle for spark?

Have someone crank over the engine. There should be a nice blue spark that goes from the end of the wire you pulled out of the center of the cap to the metal clip. It should look and sound strong, and should be easy to see, even in daylight.

How do I fix no spark?

If you do not see a spark, there is an ignition problem. Remove a plug wire and insert an old spark plug or a spark plug tester into the end of the wire (the plug boot). Place the spark plug on a metal surface on the engine, or ground the spark plug tester to the engine. Then crank the engine to check for a spark.

What sends spark to the distributor?

The ignition coil converts the low voltage electricity into high voltage power in timed pulses. That moves other distributor parts that cause the ignition coil to pulse, and sends the electricity down each spark plug wire in order. The power travels down the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and causes sparks.

Will bad points cause no spark?

If the spark is a big fat one, then the condenser is bad and needs to be replaced. 2. If no spark is visible, check to see if the points or wires are shorting to ground either at the points or at the primary terminal screw going through the housing.

How do spark plugs and ignition coils work?

For ignition coils (and many types of electrical transformer), the secondary winding is made with more windings than the primary winding. When a spark is required at a spark plug, the ignition system will switch off the current flow to the primary winding, which will cause the magnetic field to collapse.

Is there a spark in a 72 VW Bug?

Why is there no spark on my 68 VW?

Had a very similar problem on a 68 VW. No spark. Replaced the coil, center wire, points and the rotor. Nada. Turned out to be the center pin conductor in the rotor cap. Looked OK, but on close inspection, the little metal tip was gone. New cap cured the problem.

Can a VW air cooler get knocked out?

The VW air-cools must use a VW specific coil with an internal ballast or the ignition points will burn up and the condenser may get knocked out. If you do not have power at the coil with the key in both positions itโ€™s quite possible the electrical part of the ignition switch is faulty.
